Here's head stature of Kitazawa Kazunori. One half of the head is made realistic and the other half in a dissected state. This stature was made in 1971,when the model Kitazawa and I were in the third year at the same college of art.
In the world of sculpture, while the human body sculpture has been losing attention, I have kept interest in human being. In my pursuit of realism, it seems that together with the outer appearance I have gradually become interested in the inner existence which supports it.
As the result,‘Metamorphorsis’was created, which is now exhibited in Utsukushigahara Kogen Museum.In this work, by contemplating my inner-self, I sought for the state of ‘life' which is gradually assimilated to the environment itself that enfolds myself.
This work, the dissected Kitazawa Kazunori, may appear weird, but I can say it is the first step and the starting point of my view and production style to contemplate appearance(reality) and face the inner existence.
‘Contemplation of Existence', my basic theme of today was born in the way.
Is it beyond my ability to try to face the unwavering nature(truth) by throughly contemplating passing phenomena(reality) ?
ここに北澤一伯の首像がある。半面は写実的に、半面は解剖された状態で作られた首像である。この像は1971年、美大3年生の時学友だった北澤さんをモデルに作られた。
彫刻において、人体彫刻が忘れさられていく状況の中で、人間への興味を持ち続けた私は、写実を追求する中、いつしか外形の様相と共に、それを支える内側の実存在への興味を持つようになっていったように思われる。
その最初の結果として、美ヶ原高原美術館の「メタモルフォーゼ」が生まれた。ここでは、自己の内面を熟視（思）することで、いつしか自己を包み込む環境そのものへと同化していく「命」のありようを求めたものであった。
この解剖された北澤一伯の一見不気味な作品は、外形（現実）熟視し、内面的存在へと向かおうとする私の視点、制作姿勢の第一歩であり、出発点に位置するといってもよい。
「contemplation of Existence」という今日の私の基本テーマはこのように生まれた。移ろいゆく現象（現実）を徹底的に熟視することで、不動の本質（真実）に向かおうとすることは、私の分にすぎることだろうか。
